CAT in tree 5 days--can anyone help?

Hi All-

We've gotten a call from a woman in Bailey whose cat has been in a tree for 5 days. We have put her in touch with local tree service companies to see if anyone with proper equipment may be able to assist, but wanted to also post this notice to see if anyone locally may operate a tree service company or otherwise have the skills and equipment to assist with humanely getting this kitty to safety. The cat is reportedly 80 feet high at this point.

If you can help, please call Denise directly at 303-838-7679.

Avoid this headache--keep your cats safely INDOORS.

Things you should know or do if your cat gets stuck in a tree:

- cats are often in trees for 3 - 6 days. Kittens and declawed cats, in particular, often require assistance getting down safely

- if the tree is in a yard with a dog, the dog needs to be kept out of the yard for the cat to come down. Have the dog kept indoors, or walked on-leash in an area far from the tree, so the spooked cat will feel more comfortable coming down

- provide a visual "landing ramp" for the cat by getting a wooden ladder or the longest board you can find and leaning it up against the base of the tree at an angle that may help the cat feel more secure descending

- open a can of jack mackerel, tuna fish, or other particularly juicy and smelly food that would appeal to the cat, and throw the juice as high up into the tree as possible to help stimulate the cat's appetite and provide an incentive to come down

- contrary to popular thought the fire department is NOT the most appropriate agency to call. CALL PROFESSIONAL TREE SERVICES in your area to see if any of them can help. Expect to be charged for the they service they are providing

- if a crowd of people has gathered at the base of the tree, this is generally not helpful in getting the cat down. Have folks hang far back so they cat will feel more comfortable coming down

Thanks and remember- cats are safest when kept inside.
