I'm hoping this decision works out better for the Donkeys that the decision to hire Fox and Manning has for the team.
I, personally, find it difficult to fathom why anyone would take the job after Elway fired a coach who had 4 AFC West titles in 4 years. Good news is that at least the Broncos won't have to pay Fox's salary extension costs after the Bears decided to hire him.
I don't think the problem lay with the coaching staff, I think the problem has more to do with the ability of our current quarterback to win in the playoffs. He has a proven history of being good enough to lead a team into the playoffs and no further.
I like Kubiak, but I think there were better candidates out there and I'm concerned that he was hired because he and Elway are buddies, not because he was the best man for the job. Time will tell.
Sadly, I agree with you PrintSmith about Manning. I think at the beginning of this season he had the ability to make it to, and win, the playoffs but he got hurt, it showed, and it affected their game. Worse, he didn't pull himself out even though he wasn't playing 100% and the coaching staff didn't compensate their game plans to overcome. Their losses aren't all on his shoulders, but I hope he brutally and honestly evaluates his quarterbacking abilities this off-season and comes back only if he can get the job done. I'd love to see him play again so I hope whatever was ailing him is temporary and he still has the desire to play.

Fingers crossed here. I think the Kubiak Broncos can still win the AFC West provided Peyton comes back, but think we won't advance in the playoffs. A series of one and dones?
Thomas Sowell: There are no solutions, just trade-offs.
One and dones is precisely what got Fox fired, wasn't it? Making an appearance in the playoffs isn't going to cut the mustard and history has demonstrated that this is the best Manning is capable of producing. Yes, he does have a single ring adorning his finger to show he was on a winning team, but that is one success in what is it now, twelve attempts? Somehow I am not heartened with an 8.3% chance of success, even less than that if you want to include the loss of the national championship in college to Nebraska in his senior year. Granted, Tennessee was ranked #3 and Nebraska #2, but it was another championship opportunity lost with Manning under center.
No question Manning is one of the best ever, during the regular season that is, but his inability to lead a team to victory in the playoffs is just about as firmly established as his ability to lead during the regular season is.
I know Manning was injured, but let's compare and contrast for a moment. Manning throws the ball away on 3rd down with an open field in front of him with his injury, Rodgers hops and skips his way for 11 yards and a first down with his. One has a fire in his belly, the other doesn't. Elway is looking for a team with fire in its belly to be the best and Manning just hasn't demonstrated he possesses that necessary quality with either his post-season record or his recent play.
Kubiak is probably ok, I'm just not sure Elway as GM is the best for the Broncos. Seems like he would be better down on the field with the players as a coach.
Lets hope the two click and can work together to get the team on "fire" again like in the 90s.
