COLORADO SPRINGS — Evergreen and Conifer may not have sent too many kids to the 4A state cross country meet last weekend, but that didn’t stop the Cougars and Lobos from giving it their all.
Conifer
Coming in just two minutes behind the 4A winner, Conifer sophomore Abbey Putz crossed the finish line at 59th place with a 20:35.6 time. Noting that the state competition was “tough,” she said she was just happy to represent her school as the lone female competitor.
Her male counterparts faced even tougher competition in the boys race.
Evergreen
The two Cougars, Lanie and Colin Szuch, fared a little better in their respective races. Despite only finishing less than two minutes behind the front runner, Colin placed 64th. He ran the course in 17:42.8. An hour later, his younger sister, freshman Lanie, took to the course. She finished 52nd with a time of 20:30.8, also two minutes behind the leader.

COLORADO SPRINGS — Oh what a difference a classification makes.
Last year, as a 3A team in Colorado cross country, Platte Canyon was barely a blip on the state meet’s radar as only freshman Emma Dikken qualified for the big meet at the Norris Penrose Events Center.
This year, in 2A, the Huskies not only qualified their full girls team, but they finished runner-up in the team competition on Saturday.
This comes after Dikken won the 2A Region 3 race outright, defeating the second-place girl by 20 seconds. The Huskies also won regionals as a team.
