After spending an earlier, smaller meet helping pace his teammate, Evergreen senior Colin Szuch stunned the competition at the state’s biggest cross country meet of the year on Saturday morning.
In the Division-II boys race of the Liberty Bell Invitational at Heritage High School, Szuch won with an astonishing 15:29.40 time. The runner-up didn’t come in until 36.50 seconds later. In doing so, Szuch set the school record for the fastest 5K time.
But Szuch wasn’t the only Cougar to come up big during Saturday’s competition. Following a solid finish in Arvada on Thursday (15th, 20:57), junior Sarah Allen went into overdrive at the Liberty Bell. She placed third overall in the D-II race and clocked in at 18:20.70.
Conifer
Although Conifer’s cross country team didn’t go to Liberty Bell, the Lobos made an impression at the Standley Lake race. The Lobo boys enjoyed four top-25 finishes, including two in the top five.
Superstar junior Zack Gacnik paced his team with a fourth-place, 16:47 time and teammate, junior Topi Alahuhta, wasn’t far behind. He clocked in three seconds later at fifth place.

EVERGREEN — High school athletics in the foothills doesn’t get much more exciting than the Mountain Bowl between Evergreen and Conifer, no matter what the sport.
On Sept. 3 on Evergreen High School’s new turf field, the Cougars took on the Lobos and won a competitive, physical boys soccer game 4-1. Junior forward/midfielder Nick Graziano led his team with two scores, both of which came off of free kicks from roughly 25 yards out.

Four local teams sending representatives to state XC
Last Thursday and Friday at locations all over Colorado and across two classifications, Platte Canyon, Conifer, Evergreen and Front Range Christian all put their strongest cross country runners to the test at regionals.
Each school will send at least one representative to the state meet at the Norris Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs on Saturday morning. Races begin at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day.
Platte Canyon
For the first time since 2013, Platte Canyon will send its full boys and girls teams to state.
Conifer
At the 4A Region 1 race in Grand Junction on Thursday, Conifer’s boys team excelled amid stiff competition. Thanks to top-10 finishes from Zack Gacnik (fourth, 15:34.19) and Topi Alahuhta (seventh, 15:56.23), the Lobo men made a bid for third place.
Evergreen
At the same regional, Evergreen didn’t fare as well as its Lobo counterpart, but the Cougars will still see some representation at state from senior Colin Szuch, who finished second at 15:29.10.
Madeline Mancini finished second for the Cougar ladies with a 48th-place mark and a 20:47.51 time.
