One of the more iconic places to watch a high school football game because of its mountainous background, Golddigger Stadium has a charm about it that brought this small town together. If it was Friday night, there was interest in the local high school football game.
The soda pops, the hot dogs, the popcorn, it’s all right there at the concession stands. The press box so minuscule that coaches can be seen sitting on top of it, relaying play calls and dissecting the opponent’s alignment to the coaches on the field. The scoreboard now rests on the southeast side of the stadium, not in the northwest corner. Oh, and the halftime locker rooms are right where they’ve been for some time — the home team in the bus barn and the visiting squad at the rec center.
Come Friday night, there will be no more fireworks, and the lights will shut down one final time.

That’s the word that best described the feeling of the fans, workers and referees as they waited for the Clear Creek High School football team to play its last game at Digger Stadium on Friday night.
Several reflected on the occasion before kickoff.
Preparing to officiate the game were referee Christopher Hopkins and umpire Sergio Covarrubias, and both reminisced about all of the times they drove past Digger Stadium on Interstate 70 and saw the stadium lights.
“This is a landmark,” Hopkins said. “It’s a sad time, but we’re happy we were selected to officiate the last game here.”
Covarrubias said he turned down working another game just so he could be at Digger Stadium on Friday night.

Clear Creek football closes out history with a victory
As the clock struck zero on the final game at Golddigger Stadium, Tanner Younger and Ben Griffin felt the full weight of their high school football careers crashing down.
It was over. Everything — high school ball, playing at the beloved Interstate-70 field — was over for the lone seniors on the team.
Both players cried, hugging their teammates and coaches as they said goodbye to their final season. They couldn’t have asked for a better send-off to 61 years of Clear Creek football history.
