THORNTON — When Caitlin Smith dove into the pool for her third leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay, Evergreen trailed Kent Denver and Erie by a body length.
That wasn’t a problem for the EHS junior.
Throughout her 100-yard portion, Smith quickly caught up to the Sun Devils and the Tigers. Then she overtook them.
The Cougars — namely Smith, Gucker, Taylor Jacobson and Hope Atkins — ran away with the state title in the relay. At the beginning of the meet, Gucker, Atkins, Jacobson and Alyssa Cook won in the 200-yard medley relay as well.
It capped off the end of an incredibly successful state meet for Evergreen, which won its second consecutive team crown since dropping down to 3A last year.
