While average global temperature will still fluctuate from year to year, scientists focus on the decadal trend. Nine of the 10 warmest years since 1880 have occurred since the year 2000, as the Earth has experienced sustained higher temperatures than in any decade during the 20th century. As greenhouse gas emissions and atmospheric carbon dioxide levels continue to rise, scientists expect the long-term temperature increase to continue as well.

"We know the planet is absorbing more energy than it is emitting," said NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies director James Hansen.

"So we are continuing to see a trend toward higher temperatures. Even with the cooling effects of a strong La Nina influence and low solar activity for the past several years, 2011 was one of the 10 warmest years on record."

Hansen said that with the anticipated return of El Nino and a coming increase in solar activity, temperatures are likely to peak further in the coming years.

Where does it rank in the "non recorded" years?

 No idea! You should start working on that time machine so we can go back and get more accurate measurements of temps and greenhouse gas concentrations so we can resolve some of those uncertainties! tongue:

Well, it's a darn sight cooler than the volcanic heat that was around when the lighting bolt hit the primordial ooze and started the life infestation on this planet. Oh, for the good old days before all the oxygen invaded the atmosphere and turned the whole place blue.

The fastest way to stop global water and atmospheric pollution is to stop buying products made in China and several other non conforming nations.
