Program: Jennifer Anderson, Park Manager
Staunton State Park

Grand-Opening Saturday, May 18, 2013!

Jennifer Anderson is a law-enforcement-trained Park Ranger who previous worked at Chatfied, Golden Gate and Castlewood State Parks before being offered the position at Staunton State Park to head up the development and opening of this newest of the Colorado State Parks. Staunton State Park is located off hwy 285 North at the Shaffer's Crossing exit.

The 1680 acre Staunton Ranch was donated to the State of Colorado in 1986 by Frances Staunton, daughter of two physicians who were migrating to California when they stopped in Colorado and made it their home, starting the Ranch in the early 1900’s. Ms. Staunton stipulated that the Ranch could not be sold, transferred nor other-wise conveyed and that 90% of the property must remain natural.

By 2006, three other properties had been procured via Colorado Lottery funds: the Davis Ranch, Elk Falls and the Chase Ranch, bringing the total land for the Park to 3800 acres. The Ranch was added to the State and National Registers of Historic Places recently.

Over 50 volunteers have given 6,748 hours of time, offering guidance and direction to the planning as well as working to remove trees and weeds, fire-mitigatioon, developing trails, selecting climbing routes (the Park will host the State’s premier rock-climbing), taking down old fencing, designing signage, etc. The Friends of Staunton State Park is looking for volunteers to help with additional programming for the educational components of the Park, help with fund-raising for the remainder of the first phase of development (the Visitors’s Center), and the second phase, which will include water, sewer, electricity, addition road-way and more parking, etc.

The park will offer hiking, mountain-biking, rock-climbing, picnic-areas, camping (second-phase). Bar-B-Q grills are being provided for cooking and to reduce fire-danger. The picnic shelter will be available by reservation and has tables/benches, grills and toilet facilities.
