The man who fell had never climbed a 14er before, and this is one of the more dangerous and difficult 14ers to attempt.
He was not wearing proper shoes (flat-soled skateboard shoes) or clothing (although the clothing made no difference here, but it would if he'd gotten caught overnight and it had rained).
He didn't listen to his more experienced hiking partner (whom he didn't really know, also not a good idea) and chose to leave the route they'd used to come up and instead went another way that leads to cliffs that are not climb-able. The exact area where another couple had also fallen and died within the last week.
The two men got started late and didn't take enough water or food. The man who died had gotten thirsty and tired before they even separated.
They didn't have the 11 Essentials
all hikers should have heading out into the wilderness.
If you are an avid outdoor person, would like to start conquering the 14ers, or plan to spend more time in the high country, please attend Alpine Rescue Team's Safety Fair and learn how to do it safely so you come back home every time.
