EChO Shelter: A Snowy Path Forward
Open for its Ninth Week, we have already hosted 23 Individual Guests (average of 7-9 per night) and over 350 Guest Nights!
HOWEVER
The Shelter will be CLOSED if we can not get Evening Hosts to Signup and Volunteer.
Last Night, we had seven Guests (four on foot, with no vehicle) well fed, showered, and sleeping comfortably.
At 9:45 PM the Shelter Hotline received a call from Jefferson County Sheriff. They told us they had come across a woman south of Conifer, cold, wet, on foot, and had no place to go. The Deputy asked if we were open and if the Shelter could accommodate another Guest. We immediately said YES and prepared another bed.
Thirty minutes later, the Sheriff arrived with a woman in her thirties, wrapped in a blanket. We greeted her with a warm cup of Hot Chocolate, brand new socks, underwear, pajamas, a hygiene kit, and a warm shower. In the morning she had breakfast and headed down the street to meet with an EchO Client Advocate to map out a path forward.
This
'rescue', and many others like it, are not possible without the help of the entire Mountain Community.
It starts with the generosity of the
Church of the Hills, providing a beautiful facility to host the Shelter (
Thank You COTH!!)
Donations of clothing, gas cards, and financial support of EChO allow us to stock and maintain the Shelter (
Thank You EChO Donors!)
And fortunately, we have plenty of volunteers that provide warm, home-made meals
(
Thank You to the 30+ volunteer Chefs!)
However, the Shelter does not come alive,
CAN NOT OPEN, unless other volunteers take an evening away from their home and hearth, and give their time to be an
ON-SITE Team Leader, Evening Host, or Kitchen Coordinator.
We have been blessed with a core of about fifteen to twenty volunteers that have already volunteered several nights each this season -
THANK YOU!
But we need more volunteers!
We have 6 EMPTY ON-SITE spots between tonight and Sunday Night.
And 14 more EMPTY ON-SITE spots next week, and 17 EMPTY ON-SITE spots the week after that.
Please Help.
Signup for Training and Volunteering the NEXT 3 Weeks, including over Christmas and New Year's Weekends!
Teens and Single Digit Temperatures are Routine Going Forward
With your help, the Shelter provides a hot dinner, a warm, safe place to sleep, laundry and a shower, a warm breakfast, and sack lunch.
This nightly respite provides 6-15 Guests the ability to engage each morning on their path forward. Several of our Guests have started jobs and credit EChO and the Shelter with providing the stability to find and hold their jobs.
Four of our Guests this season are ON FOOT - NO Vehicle and the Overnight Shelter is literally lifesaving.
