IMHS is seeking a dynamic individual with part-time availability (between 8 - 12 hours per week) to help develop our volunteer program. There is tremendous room for growth in this position and we expect that inevitably the Volunteer Coordnator job will bloom into a full time position.

Job Title: Volunteer Coordinator
Job Status: Part time, Hourly, Non-exempt
Job Relationship: Reports to Shelter Supervisor; Supervises shelter volunteers; Supervises shelter staff and community service workers as assigned

Position Summary: The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for developing IMHS’s volunteer program in order to best meet the growing needs of the agency. The Volunteer Coordinator oversees daily shelter operations as assigned, including animal care, cleaning, performing client care services and other duties as directed.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
• Implements strategy for recruiting volunteers:
o Works closely with Shelter Supervisor to identify volunteer opportunities
o Determines volunteer skills, training, and time needed for each position and creates consistently formatted written volunteer job descriptions
o Plans appropriate announcements for each volunteer job in order to fill the position(s) in a timely manner
o Responds to volunteer applications promptly
o Regularly evaluates methods of recruitment and modifies strategy as appropriate
• Coordinates orientation and training for new volunteers
• Works closely with Shelter Supervisor to ensure maximum coverage and effectiveness in volunteer scheduling
• Creates and oversees system to ensure documentation of volunteer activity including tracking of volunteer hours, photo files, job descriptions, policies and procedures, training, evaluations and recognition. Maintains records and files in accordance with IMHS policy
• Implements a consistent volunteer recognition system and works closely with IMHS management to organize regular annual volunteer appreciation event
• Seeks to retain volunteers by recognizing their unique contributions to the organization, utilizing their skills to best meet organizational goals, and actively appreciating their contribution to IMHS’s mission
• Creates and implements process for more streamlined and efficient communication between IMHS and volunteers
• Participates in writing or editing for publications, forms and grant proposals as directed
• Prepares monthly reports and other data as requested by the Shelter Supervisor or Shelter Director
• Responsible for supervising daily shelter operations as assigned:
o Ensures that IMHS policies and procedures are being followed; oversees that IMHS standards for animal care are maintained and that the shelter environment is kept safe and clean during open hours each day
o Performs adoptions, animal intakes, and medical treatments in adherence with IMHS policies
o Provides prompt and professional customer service to clients over the phone, via email and in person
o Answers the shelter phone as calls are received whenever possible
o Counsels and educates clients on proper animal care and provides resources to members of the public in a manner that serves the best interest of the animals and the organization
o Actively solicits donations from the public and maintains an awareness that each transaction with a visitor, client, or volunteer has the potential to increase financial and community support for the organization
o Handles money and daily receipts for the shelter and thrift store in accordance with IMHS policies
• Participates in meetings, special events and fundraisers as requested; maintains flexibility in order to be available for meetings and events occurring after-hours as needed
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
• Experience managing volunteers in a non-profit environment strongly preferred
• Demonstrated ability to work with the public in a positive, professional and upbeat manner
• Strong organizational and project management skills
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and leadership skills; excellent writing skills
• Ability to consistently exercise good judgment
• Excellent attention to detail
• Good data entry and computer skills; able to accurately maintain and collect statistical data from shelter software systems
• Adequate animal handling skills; able to work safely with shelter animals, disinfectants, and cleaning supplies in both indoor and outdoor environments
• Good crisis management skills and the ability to make sound decisions when working independently
• Commitment to the mission and objectives of IMHS
• Valid Colorado driver’s license and good driving record

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Must be able to work quickly and efficiently, with a high degree of organization. Work may be performed remotely and in a shelter office and kennel setting, and often involves sitting for up to 2 hours at a time, performing data entry, standing, bending, lifting, stooping, and pushing. Must be able to lift and carry at least 45 pounds without assistance, up to 75 pounds with reasonable accommodations. Must be able to safely and humanely control cats and leashed dogs up to 200 pounds. Must possess good vision, hearing, smell, and have good dexterity and reflexes. Ability to withstand outside weather variations. Exposure to potential hazards include disinfectants, high levels of noise, slippery work surfaces, animal bites/scratches and zoonotic diseases, animal dander and waste, and entering/leaving work areas alone.

The starting pay for this position is $9 - $10/hour, DOE. We are seeking a candidate who can grow with our organization.
