IMHS is looking to fill a part-time weekend position for Animal Care/Shelter Associate. This is a VERY part time position that is scheduled from 7 am to 11 am both Saturday and Sunday. We cannot guarantee any additional hours at this point but hope that with continued growth there may be an opportunity to add more. Intermountain Humane Society Job Description
Job Title: Animal Care and Shelter Operations Associate
Status: Part-time, hourly, non-exempt
Job Relationship: Supervises shelter volunteers and community service workers; works collaboratively with fellow staff members; reports directly to Shelter Supervisor, or to the Shelter Director in the absence of the Shelter Supervisor
Position Summary: Responsible for the care and welfare of the shelter animals; accountable for the sanitation and maintenance of the shelter including indoor and outdoor areas, and equipment. Ensures safe conditions in shelter’s indoor and outdoor areas.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
*Performs routine shelter cleaning in accordance with PACFA requirements and established protocols to attain high standards for a safe, sanitary and comfortable environment for the animals as well as the public.
*Cleans and disinfects shelter and clinic areas, including but not limited to: floors and counters, all caging surfaces, bowls, toys, bedding, and litter pans
*Keeps work areas well-stocked, clean and orderly, and safe for shelter visitors
*Cleans and maintains outdoor dog runs and play areas with fresh wood chips according to established weekly schedule. Scoops outdoor runs and play areas daily
*Performs daily feeding, watering and medicating of shelter animals and maintains feeding boards, medication charts, and other documentation as directed
*Actively monitors the comfort and care of shelter animals throughout each shift, including but not limited to, the following:
*Ensures each animal has fresh water available
*Exercises animals as directed
*Provides clean, dry and ample bedding to animals to ensure warmth and comfort
*Provides species and age-appropriate toys for each animal
*Reports health or behavior concerns promptly to the Shelter Supervisor or Director
*Promptly reports problems with equipment and supplies, and facility/grounds concerns to Shelter Manager or Director.
*Shovels snow as needed to clear walkways around shelter entrances and create paths leading to outdoor kennels, sheds, and clinic; ensures safety of walkways leading from parking lot to shelter entrances by apply anti-slip agents as necessary. Promptly reports unsafe conditions to Shelter management
*Reads and initials Staff Communication Log on each shift, and posts notes in General Communication Log as appropriate to ensure optimal animal health and safety of staff, volunteers and shelter visitors
*Actively participates in staff meetings as requested; provides constructive input to supervisor regarding shelter services and procedures
*Represents IMHS in a professional and courteous manner at all times to clients, volunteers, and staff
*Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
• High school graduate or GED required
• Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; must understand instructions
• Good organizational, animal handling, and interpersonal skills
• Willingness to learn about animal care, health, and behavior; ability to recognize signs and symptoms of disease in cats and dogs
• Able to safely work with animals, disinfectants, and cleaning supplies in both indoor and outdoor environments
• Highly reliable and efficient worker; conscientious about ensuring workplace safety
• Ability to prioritize and perform duties efficiently and effectively with an adequate amount of independence
• Positive attitude and good sense of teamwork
• Strong sense of initiative to maintain a clean and well-organized shelter environment
• Working knowledge of equipment maintenance helpful
• Good problem-solving skills, strong attention to detail, and demonstrated good judgment
• Commitment to IMHS’s mission and high standards for animal care
• Valid Colorado driver’s license and good driving record
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Must be able to work quickly and efficiently, and maintain a safe working environment. Work routinely involves standing, bending, lifting, stooping, and pushing. Must be able to lift and carry at least 45 pounds without assistance, up to 100 pounds with reasonable accommodations. Must be able to safely and humanely control cats and leashed dogs up to 150 pounds. Must possess good vision, hearing, smell, and have good dexterity and reflexes. Ability to withstand outside weather variations. Must be able to shovel snow as needed to clear walkways around shelter entrances and create paths leading to outdoor kennels and sheds. Exposure to potential hazards include disinfectants, high levels of noise, slippery work surfaces, animal bites/scratches and zoonotic diseases, animal dander and waste, and entering/leaving work areas alone.
