Jeffco Open Space Accepts Applications in March for Youth Employment
Posted February 24, 2016, Last updated February 25, 2016
Summer job applications by Jefferson County youth ages 14 to 18 will be accepted from March 1 to March 31 by Jeffco Open Space for the 2016 Trails Stewardship Team (TST).

The Trail Stewardship Team was created in 1975 to provide young people with summer employment opportunities to build trails and maintain Open Space Parks while developing a stewardship ethic for natural resources and protected areas. The work is challenging, rewarding and physically demanding.

Applications are available online during the month of March at jeffco.us/jobs . The application process mirrors typical workplace recruitments, providing a real-work experience from start to finish.

Selection to the TST will follow an in-person interview. No longer will a random drawing or lottery be used for selection.

• Applicants will need a social security number and a letter of reference (from an adult other than a parent or guardian) to complete the online application by the March 31 deadline.

• Eligible youths must be age 14 to 18 as of June 7, 2016 and be a Jefferson County resident.

• Participants will be selected based on their application, letter of reference, interview, applicable experience and availability to work all 8 weeks of the TST season with no more than two absences occurring between June 14 and August 4.

• Successful applicants will attend a mandatory orientation on June 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

• Work is scheduled Tuesday through Thursday, from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The program begins on Tuesday, June 14 and concludes on Thursday, August 4, 2016.

• The wage is $8.31 per hour.

• Candidates must provide their documentation of citizenship, be in good health, be responsible for their own transportation to and from the Open Space facilities each workday, be punctual, be prepared with appropriate gear daily and be able to follow verbal direction. The work is hard and demanding, but it can be fun and enjoyable, too. Each TST laborer can expect to cover 200 miles in eight weeks by hiking to and from job sites for trail maintenance.
