Inter-Canyon Fire Protection District 2020 Volunteer Recruitment

01 May 2020 10:49 #1 by MountainWelcomeCrew
Inter-Canyon Fire Protection District is launching our 2020 volunteer recruiting campaign with a new recruiting slogan - “Expect the Unexpected and Then Conquer It.” The ability of ICFPD volunteer firefighters, EMTs and paramedics to respond and adapt to emergencies is the catalyst for our new recruitment campaign. Volunteers can select from either the firefighter track or the EMS track. Both tracks do require extensive initial and ongoing training to serve the residents and visitors of ICFPD.

ICFPD provides structural firefighting, wildland firefighting, and Emergency Medical Services to 52 square miles of Jefferson County. With five stations, five engines, three water tenders, two rescue trucks and three Advanced Life Support ambulances we respond to 450 emergency calls each year. ICFPD will open our application  process Friday May 1 and close on Friday May 15. Interested individuals must complete an application, interview, background check and physical examination. Volunteer firefighters make up 69 percent of the nation’s fire service and save communities nationwide an estimated $140 billion per year. Yet nationwide the number of volunteers has declined by about 12 percent since 1984 while call volume has nearly tripled. In addition, the average age of volunteer firefighters is increasing as departments are finding it difficult to reach new volunteers. As the population of the Inter-Canyon Fire Protection District continues to increase in age, call volume increases and the number of potential volunteers declines. Inter-Canyon Fire Protection District is launching our 2020 recruiting campaign beginning May 1. “Recruiting new volunteers and retaining existing members are two critical challenges facing volunteer fire and EMS departments,” said ICFPD Fire Chief Skip Shirlaw. “Research has shown that a key hurdle is many people simply don’t realize their department needs volunteers. ICFPD does need volunteer firefighters, EMTs and paramedics. We provide all of the required training, uniforms, PPE, and opportunities to learn new skills as well as serve the community. We ask our volunteers to ‘Expect the Unexpected and Then Conquer it.’ ”

Volunteers must live within the district or within one air mile of the district. To receive an application send an email
