Fire Mitigation & Forestry Technician (Part time)
  • Position type: Part‑Time, W‑2
  • Reports to: Fire Mitigation & Forestry Specialist
  • Compensation: $25.00–$35/hr DOE/Q
  • Work environment: Outdoor fieldwork in rugged terrain and variable weather
Hours
High season (Apr–Nov): Guaranteed 128 hrs/month (typically sixteen 8‑hr shifts);
with flexible scheduling. A minimum commitment of 80 hours per month during
this time is required for consideration for employment.

Low season (Dec–Mar): PRN based on project load, up to 28 hrs/week
Occasional weekend or extended shifts as project needs dictate

Role summary
The Fire Mitigation & Forestry Technician supports hands-on forestry, fuels‑reduction, and defensible‑space projects on residential, rural, municipal, and public lands. This entry‑ to intermediate‑level field role is ideal for candidates seeking part‑time work in forestry, wildland fire mitigation, or land management. Technicians work under a Crew Lead and must demonstrate strong safety awareness, a solid work ethic, and stewardship of land.

Key responsibilities
  • Carry out defensible‑space and fuel‑mitigation tasks per local fire codes, NFPA guidance, and USFS best practices
  • Remove brush, ladder fuels, and perform fuel separation around structures
  • Perform chainsaw tasks (limbing, bucking, basic felling) consistent with training and certification limits
  • Support precision thinning and stand‑density reduction work
  • Operate and maintain hand tools and light equipment (chainsaws, brush cutters, chippers, blowers, hand tools) under supervision
  • Load, unload, secure, and care for tools/equipment; keep clean, organized, and safe job sites
  • Identify and report hazards or changing site conditions to Crew Leads promptly
  • Follow company safety procedures, job hazard analyses, and PPE requirements
  • Work constructively on crew; take direction and contribute to a positive team culture
Low‑season duties (as assigned)
  • Hand‑crew support, equipment maintenance, and business property upkeep
  • Assist with business development or outreach tasks and professional development activities
Required qualifications
  • Physically able to perform strenuous outdoor labor on steep, uneven terrain
  • Comfortable working in forested environments and adverse/variable weather
  • Willingness to learn chainsaw operation, forestry techniques, and safety protocols
  • Reliable, safety‑minded, team player with strong situational awareness
  • Reliable transportation to and from worksites, including in offroad terrain.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred qualifications
  • 2+ years career wildland fire OR 3+ years volunteer wildland fire experience.
  • Relevant certifications or coursework: S212/FAL3 (or equivalent), S130/S190/L180, S215, S290
  • Degree in Forestry, Ecology, Natural Resources, Fire Management, or similar.
  • ISA arborist, SAF certified forester or forestry technician
  • First Aid / CPR / Stop the Bleed (or willingness to obtain)
*Additional compensation beyond the above pay matrix may be considered for extensive documented heavy equipment operations experience in mountainous terrain, CDL-A, FALL-1, HEQ-B, FEL-B.
