Winter Riding

So now that we have had at least one winter storm, and due for another, it may be a good time to think about how you prepare for winter riding.
Some people for the most part stop riding when the snow starts and their horse is "on vacation" until spring, some people go for the occasional ride, and some continue to ride consistently all year. Depending on what you do, there are a few things to think about.
Horses, especially if kept outdoors, will grow a pretty thick winter coat. This is great for keeping them warm, not so great for getting sweaty and overheated. If you are riding consistently over the winter, especially in an indoor arena, you may consider clipping some of the coat to keep your horse cooler. This of course will mean your horse needs to be blanketed. If you aren't riding consistently or don't want to clip, remember your horse may get overheated faster and will take extra time to cool down and dry off after riding. If you have backed off on your riding and just go on the occasional weekend ride, your horse will not be as fit as it was during the summer so your rides may need to be shorter.
Many people will pull shoes in the winter to decrease slipping and snow packing in the feet. Whether you pull shoes or not often depends on your horse and the amount of riding you do. You should discuss with your farrier the best plan. If you do pull shoes your horse should still be trimmed over the winter, just maybe not as frequently.
If you are going trail riding try to pick a route you are familiar with. Things can get exciting if you hit wire, branches, a ditch, ice etc that is hard to see or buried in snow.
And finally, as the rider make sure you are wearing appropriate clothing to stay warm. Nothing turns a ride unpleasant faster than being too cold.

If you have any questions about riding your horse in winter give me a shout, otherwise, have fun.
