Is it stressful to transport your cat?

Do you dread taking your cat to the vet? You are not alone. Many cats do not get the care and regular check ups that they need because their owners perceive that it is stressful for the cat (and owner).
Here are some tips to make your next trip with your kitty a breeze:
1. Use a hard sided carrier that can be opened from the top. It is much easier (and more dignified for the cat) to be lifted out of the top of the carrier vs. being grabbed and pulled out the front.
2. Place the carrier open in the house in a sunny spot where your cat likes to sunbathe. Consider placing a favorite blanket or toy in the carrier.
3. Occasionally place treats or food in the carrier for your cat.
4. Once your cat has become used to the carrier (this may take days or weeks), shut them in and carry them around the house for 5 minutes, then set it down and let them out. Repeat 1-2x weekly until this is not a big deal.
5. Final step: Take your cat for a practice drive in the carrier, go around the block and come home. The next time you have to go to the vet, groomer, or boarding kennel, you and your cat will be much more relaxed.
