Gentian Violet and Dogs

Gentian Violet and Dogs was created by CC
Several months ago, I went to an ear nose and throat specialist regarding a yeast infection that had developed in my ear. He used gentian Violet as an anti fungal to treat it and it worked quite well. I have also used this years ago to treat a yeast related diaper rash on one of my children and it worked amazingly well.
We have an English Bulldog that has a constant yeast infection in his ears. Is Gentian Violet safe for dogs?
We have adjusted his diet and made some other changes to slow yeast growth down.

Becky,
I do not have any personal experience with using gentian violet on dogs. In my discussion with several other veterinarians, there are a few precautions to take into consideration:
1) it can be very staining to the insides of the ear canal
2) it is toxic to the ear if the ear drum (tympanic membrane) is ruptured as a result of infection (many products are)
3) it is a known carcinogen in dogs and cats
if you are still interested in using this product, I would do so under the guidance of a veterinarian...
Hope this information helps. Good luck.
