A Word of Caution for Your Horses

11 Jul 2012 10:06 #1 by Shannon Harland-DVM
A word of caution: with all the sudden recent rain (Hooray!) and the fact that most pastures have been under drought like stress, we are likely to be seeing a sudden increase in moisture and nutrient content in our pastures (hooray!), however please use caution. You may need to limit or restrict your horses' access to the pasture for a few days and then re-introduce gradually as you would in the spring when the grass first "greens up" to avoid intestinal upset (colic) or founder (laminitis). Our practice has already treated several incidents of colic that may have been related to the recent rain/pasture change. Please call if you have more questions.
