AND NOW......HOW TO TRAVEL WITH KIDS AND A SMILE!!!

by FROM AIR TO THERE on THERE ON THURS. DEC.20, 2012 [/color]

When it comes to traveling with children, people generally are divided into two groups. Parents who dread traveling because of the confinement in a relatively small space, and those who dread traveling, because they have to share that confined space with.....CHILDREN!!!

It is a very stressful event for all involved. There just sometimes is NO comforting an 18 month old child who is teething, and often, it is very hard for a child's inner ear to adjust to the changes in cabin pressure. After witnessing this countless times, it is a situation that is difficult for all involved. Following are a few tips to choose from that may help in SOME ways!!

Talk to your pediatrician, ask if there is a decongestant, or other medication that may help soothe a smaller child. Something as simple as a Benadryl, ear drops, a special pacifier may be very helpful. Do Not administer any medications unless advised by your physician.
If your little one has a special way to soothe him or herself at home ( a teddy bear, blanket, etc.), make sure you bring it with you on your flight.
For toddlers, pack a small bag with toys they have never seen. Take one or two they may have been gifted at Christmas, put them away, and bring them out for this "special fun time".
Favorite snacks are helpful, maybe even something considered a "treat" they don't get often. It would be wise to avoid high-caffeine drinks AND high sugar drinks as well. Stick with lightly flavored waters, or drinks that will help with hydration. Unless it is a part of their diet (such as with infants) avoid dairy, as these can curdle in their digestion system, and add to nausea if you encounter turbulence.
Please be aware of what foods/beverages your airline will offer on-board. Space for catering is VERY limited, and they are not equipped to handle your special dietary needs, especially the needs of children and infants.
Music! Have your Ipod loaded with a few tunes that are soothing, and fun for children. With little ones, having the earbuds near their ears, rather than in them, will be a safe way to get their attention. A small external speaker attached will also be helpful, please just be mindful of others and their desire for calm.
Games - There are many fun card games, or video games you can have loaded on your favorite media device. Children as young as 2 will enjoy the interaction with you, even if their attention span is short.
With the wonderful world of electronics you can have a world of movies and cartoons at your fingertips. Again, the key is to have something new and interesting for your little ones to enjoy.
Try to be as rested as possible before your flight, and pack plenty of patience. Be among the early arrivals at your gate. If you are flying with an airline that doesn't have the option of reserved seats, your chances of being seated together are much greater with an early check-in.
Encourage children to use the restrooms before boarding. Change diapers when and where you have a bit more room (the airport changing area is much larger than the one in the aircraft lavatory). Also please be mindful, that it is not appropriate to change a diaper in the aircraft cabin. There will be a changing table in the lavatory, and in most aircraft, at least 2 are available.

Hopefully some of these tips will give all who are traveling a bit less stress during flights that will ultimately bring families together for their celebrations.
