Did you know the flower of the month of April is the Sweet Pea?
The botanical name Lathyrus odoratus is Greek for pea and scented or fragrant pea. They were discovered by a Franciscan monk in Sicily, Father Franciscus Cupani in 1697. Unlike their cousin the garden pea, Sweet Peas are poisonous and should not be eaten. Sweet Peas make lovely garden plants. They are annual and like full sun. You can either start seeds outdoors or indoors 4-6 weeks before last average last frost. Soak seeds in water 12-24 hours before sowing to help with germination. If you want instant color Bailey Garden Center carries sweet peas in 4-packs in the spring and summer.
