Last year while I was shopping in The Chill Squirrel, I noticed a bar of shampoo made by a local home-based business and thought that I'd try it since I'm on a mission to reduce our plastic use in our home. I had no idea how well it would work, but thought it worth a try because I love to support local. The business is
Emily's Homestead
in Bailey, and you can find her items also at Fun & Funky Art Gallery, or online.
Oh wow is all I can say! The shampoo far exceeded my expectations - it lathers incredibly well, it leaves my hair feeling shiny and soft, and each bar lasts about 2 months (I rub the short end against my scalp rather than the large flat side) making it not only better for the environment in not buying liquid shampoo in a plastic bottle, but significantly less expensive as well! The Rosemary Mint Beer & Aloe and the Green Tea are my favorite scents, but she has a great selection (Chamomile Citrus, Birch Bark, Spiced Coffee, Lavendar Dreams, Oatmeal & Stout Beer, Ayurvedic, Citrus Mint, etc). She even makes shampoo for dogs!
I also tried her soaps, luxury lotion bar in a tin, and probiotic deodorant. Ditto on the soap and deodorant being fantastic - I'm a fan of the Jewelweed for itchy skin (it smells divine), and like the shampoo, she has an amazing selection of scents. Currently available (she sells out and makes some only seasonally):
Chai Tea
Chamomile & Calendula Castile
Chocolate-Covered Cherry
Cucumber & Oak
Fly Guy's Bar O' Soap
Gladiator Men
Herb Garden
Lavender Lilac Oatmeal
Oatmeal, Goat's Milk and Honey
Ocean Mist Salt Bar
Old West Men
Peppermint Oatmeal
Woodland Walk Soap
I'm loving the Lemon Basil Probiotic Deodorant for how well it works and the natural scent. Despite it not being an antiperspirant, I haven't sweated while doing outside work in humidity. The smaller tube she sells is handy for vacations. It's pricey, but worth it.
I like the lotion bar because I don't get lotion all over my fingers when applying. I hold it by the thin plastic wrap and rub it into the back of my hands. She sells it in a push up tube or stick if you don't want the tin, but those are plastic. My only minor complaint: I wish she had more scent options (this is unscented).
For those wanting toiletries made with all natural ingredients that you can purchase locally and reduce plastic container use, give her products a try and please tell her Sharon from My Mountain Town says hi!
