Steep Thoughts

“I’ve only seen fireworks in Evergreen once, and that was the second New Year’s Eve we lived here. Something about freezing your butt off and watching fireworks from across the road sort of detracts from the experience I’m talking about. And anyway, there haven’t been fireworks in town since.”

In the June edition of Steep Thoughts, Sarah Ann Noel gives some alternatives to fireworks for our kiddos to enjoy this 4th of July.

Pasta with Alfredo is a post that most women can relate to! Sarah Ann Noel uses an incredibly accurate metaphor of how our thoughts, our to-do lists, and all we have to accomplish are like noodles that intertwine and combine to make our bowl of pasta. “Generally speaking, I do not hang my hat on astrology or its many, many adjacent practices. I believe in the general sentiment of Love and that we can share our energy, for better or for worse, with others.”

“February: this itty-bitty month packs a punch with Valentine’s Day as the center of the target. It is the month of love. For weeks leading up to the so-called Hallmark holiday, little red hearts float over our heads in cafes and shops and schools, like we’re 3D versions of old-fashioned cartoons, consumed with emotion and any moment at risk of our eyes popping out of our heads should the object of our affection cross our path. Because that’s what love is. A romantic passion that takes over your physicality. (This is the sarcastic part. Serious part forthcoming.)”

“Why do we expect spring by the beginning of March? It doesn’t feel like spring. Historically, nothing in the mountains in March suggests spring, if we’re defining spring as this sort of warming up. Up here at elevation, spring is some of the best snow, the best skiing, all the best of winter. And we are still in the thick of it too: panicking about whether the firewood is running out and, my God, trying to navigate the trail around Evergreen Lake. (Sad to see the ice skating rink close? Just take a little spin around the lake—the trail is as icy smooth as glass. You can get out on most trails in regular sneakers if you must, but for the walk around the lake, take your spikes.)”

This is the time of year when we all start to yearn for warmer weather and for winter to take its icy grip on us. Sarah Ann Noel shares her views on spring fever in the March edition of Steep Thoughts.

“So, if you need it, this is your sign, with spring springing, to wake up and say the thing you need to live out in the world. Make some noise and join the season’s symphony and bask in the sunny peace that follows.”

Sarah Ann Noel talks spring in the April edition of Steep Thoughts.

“This is why art exists. Because we have feelings and opinions and ideas swirling around inside, and sometimes we need an easier, safer way of communicating them. We establish metaphors and symbolism to say the thing we want to say. Humans are complicated creatures, another thing that separates us on that biological sliding scale, in that we’re not always a unified herd.”

Art is a wonderful way for the artist to express their emotions and opinions. And most of us aren’t as harsh on the artist if we don’t see eye-to-eye with them. Sarah Ann Noel talks about this perspective in the May edition of Steep Thoughts.
