Internet Safety & Kids

I'd like to get some input from others in the community here regarding how they handle their kids and internet use. I have four kids, three of them girls, I have quite a bit of computer knowledge and know the dangers. Quite frankly, what's out there scares me. I really believe kids are very naive regarding safety on the internet. I've done some site blocking (nothing porn, just venues for chat), but even very popular social sites like facebook can be dangerous. Two of my four think I'm over reacting and they are always "safe", pfft!

How do some of the parents here keep their kiddos/teens safe?

I don't think you are over reacting at all.
The internet can be your best friend or your worst enemy.
We had 4 kids. All grown now but they will tell you that while they were growing up...The computer was in the family room where we all were. They could use the computer providing we were home and available to monitor their use. That is just the way it was. No laptop in their room....the family computer was just that.
Same with my grandson now. He does not use the computer unless I am present and able to supervise.

Paranoid? My sister is in IT and has three kids. She does leave the computer in the family room, but she is much more paranoid about identity theft than smut. She will only allow the kids to use gift cards on the net, never debit or credit cards.
