JCPL Launches Library Summer Challenge to Offset Learning Loss from COVID and the ‘Summer Slide’

(Lakewood, Colo., May 4, 2021)—Jefferson County Public Library (JCPL) is kicking off an annual summer event that encourages lifelong learning for every member of the community. The theme for this year’s Library Summer Challenge, which includes reading as well as activities, is Wild Ideas! The event runs June 1 through July 31, which is when participants can start logging points and earning prizes. People can register ahead of the event and prizes will be available at JCPL’s 10 Library locations June 1.

“Who says that learning only happens inside?” asks Donna Walker, JCPL executive director. “Our programming team has created a list of dynamic ideas for our Library Summer Challenge that will inspire community members to take a walk on the wild side with new ways to expand their thinking about learning, reading and libraries!”

Whatever it is that sparks your wild ideas—from fantasy to suspense, examples of heroism in non-fiction or activities that introduce you to new ways of doing things—we encourage you to read it, do it and log your points. All efforts will contribute to a community goal of donating $500 to Jeffco Eats, a nonprofit with the meaningful mission of keeping Jefferson County fed.

Participants earn prizes (customized by age range) as they log reading time and complete activities to earn 500 points. Those who earn 500 points after reaching the first 500-point mark will be entered into a grand prize drawing for a new iPad.

While most Colorado libraries host summer programs to prevent the “summer slide,” or loss of knowledge between school years, JCPL is pushing beyond the traditional approach with suggested activities for those who learn in different ways. The result is a program that meets the needs of all community members at all stages of life to stretch the mind and body.

Thousands of people register every year through jeffcolibrary.org, the Beanstack app or by calling 303.235.5275.
