Good chances for thunderstorms today across most of CO as a weak upper level trough passes to our north. Some storms could produce brief heavy downpours and small hail this afternoon and evening along with frequent lightning across the foothills. Some storms could approach severe limits on the eastern Plains this evening.
Then our upper ridge will build back into the region which will bring warmer than normal temps with only isolated afternoon and evening storms Tuesday through Thursday. Temps may approach record levels once again Tuesday through Thursday. An upper level trough is then forecast to pass to our north and drag a weak cold front across CO on Friday, which should cool temps back down to seasonal norms Friday and Saturday. Ridge then builds back in over Labor Day weekend which increases temps. Mostly isolated storms for the upcoming weekend, although models suggest more widespread activity may be possible on Labor Day.
Long range models suggest early September will feature above average temps and below average precipitation, so fire danger will become a bigger concern as we move into September as ground fuels begin to dry out. Models also suggest another Atlantic hurricane will form next week, but have the track staying well off the East Coast before heading into the eastern Canadian maritime provinces. Models also suggest some type of tropical system may develop in the western Gulf of Mexico next week and meander along the Gulf Coast.
