wxgeek's weather-Cold and Snow This Week

A weak cold front will bring coler temps and a slight chance for light snow this evening and tonight. Anything beyond a dusting to an inch is not anticipated, and many areas may not see any snow at all. Tuesday will be mostly sunny and warmer.

The big change in our weather will occur Wednesday night into Thursday. An upper level trough will dig down from the Gulf of Alaska and form a cutoff low over AZ on Thursday. An associated arctic front will drag Canadian arctic air down over CO as well. Numerical models have some differences on the track of this system, but the concensus is to bring the arctic front across CO Wednesday night, and develop a good upslope flow that will begin to bring snow to most of CO by midnight Wednesday. Snow will continue overnight and into Thursday afternoon. Temps will continue to drop during the day on Thursday as artic air becomes more entrenched, with high temps in the teens. Temps could drop to near or below zero on Thursday night. Snow should end by Thursday evening. Accumulations at this time look to be on the light side, as arctic fronts typically don't produce a lot of snow, and the best dynamics will remain well to our southwest with the upper low over AZ. Estimates at this time would be for 1-2 inches across the Metro Area and Plains, with 2-4 inches across the foothills. The Thursday morning commute could be quite slow and slick, with roads remaining ice and snow packed much of the day on Thursday into the evening commute.

Friday we should see more sun but temps will remain cold. Long range models not quite sure how they handle the evolution of the upper low over AZ. If the low kicks out across northern AZ and NM, then we could see some additional snow over the weekend. If the low tracks farther south, then no snow for CO. Some models suggest a new upper trough will move down from Canada over the weekend, so that could bring additional snow as well. Will have to wait and see how the models evolve things.
