Fri Mar 9

Very nice day today across the state. We should see a close repeat on Saturday, except for stronger southerly winds and some mid and high level clouds associated with our wayward cutoff upper low beginning to move northeast from the AZ/NM border. Southerly winds will be strongest over the eastern Plains, so foothills should only see light winds on Saturday. Temps on Saturday close to today. On Sunday, the upper low will be moving from the TX panhandle into western KS and then eastern NE. Depending on the model, the far eastern Plains could see some light precip on Sunday morning into early afternoon associated with the upper low. Definitely more clouds east of I-25 on Sunday, and winds becmome more northwesterly on Sunday. Because of the clouds and proximity to upper low, Sunday temps may not be as warm as currently advertised, but still should be a nice day for early March, especially in the foothills.

As this upper low moves into the southern Plains, still a good chance for a severe weather outbreak this weekend, as well as heavy rain leading to localized flooding. Main impacts will be on TX and OK on Saturday and spreadinf into KS Sat night, then affecting MO, LA and AR as well on Sunday.

Warm, breezy and dry weather will persist well into next week. This will cause an increase in fire danger in areas where snow has melted, but otherwise a very nice weather week ahead with temps well above seasonal norms, and temps in the low 70's across the Urban Corridor and Plains, with mid 50's to low 60's in the foothills. Lots of melting for areas with snow still.

Long range models continue to advertise a big change in the weather pattern for next weekend, with a large upper trough moving from the west coast across the Rockies. The upper trough could linger into early the following week. STill too early to pinpoint track and actual weather impacts, but temps will be much cooler with precip likely. Tis that time of year when snow levels will come back into play, where upper foothills can get lots of snow but just rain at lower elevations.
Nice Weekend Forecast
Our wayward cutoff upper low current spinning over southwest NM. Models suggest this low will continue to meander over NM Friday and Saturday before kicking out to the northeast across the southern Plains on Sunday. This translates to very nice weather across CO Friday through Sunday, with temps warming to above seasonal norms this weekend and only light breezes across most areas with no precip. Low to mid 60's on the Plains with upper 40's to mid 50's in the foothills this weekend, so a great weekend to get out and enjoy all there is to enjoy. This very nice early Spring weather is expecetd to continue across CO through most of next week as well. As upper flow becomes west to southwest, we could see breezy conditions at times next week. As snow begins to melt off lower evelation areas, fire danager will remain elevated with dry and warm conditions next week. Next chance for precip appears to be next weekend as an upper trough is forecast to move across CO. Longer range models indicate the chance for a more significant Spring storm the following week, but would not put much stock in that at this point.

Across the US, a chance for severe storms today across much of KY, TN, AR and into northern and eastern TX. As the cutoff low over NM kicks east this weekend, there is a good chance for a large severe weather outbreak across portions of TX, OK, KS, AR and MO with very desctructive tornadoes possible. If living or traveling in this region this weekend, stay alert and informed of severe weather threats.
