The Teller County West Creek Fire which began yesterday within the old Hayman burn is contained and controlled. The fire location was approximately 7 miles west of Hwy 67 on County Road 78. The fire burned 6.8 acres. No structures where threaten. A down power line was determined to be the fire cause.

Though this was a small fire, the fuel types associated with light flashy fuels and old timber slash on the forest floor created an extremely high threat to firefighter safety. Initial attach was conducted by fire crews from the Teller County Wildland Fire Taskforce and the United States Forest Service. Today, crews from the Teller County Wildland Fire Task Forces and a United States Forest Service Hotshot crew are conducting mop-up operations. Crews will continue through today and tomorrow to finish mop-up operations until all materials are determined to be cold. Mountain Communities Fire Protection District will conduct continued monitoring and patrol of the burn area over the next several days.

Press release.
