Monday May 14

After some much needed moisture this past week, a return to warm and drier conditions is expected this week. Temps will be above seasonal norms through Friday. Chances for afternoon and evening showers and thunderstroms will increase Wednesday and Thursday as a weak upper trough moves across the state. Precip will be mostly confined to high moutains and foothills, and any precip is expected to be on the light side, although small hail and gusty outlfow winds are possible near showers and thunderstorms.

Stronger and gusty westerly winds will be possible Thursday and Friday as a surface trough forms over the eastern Plains. This will act to dry out moisture from the past week, so fire danger will be higher torwards the end of this week. Models indicate a slight chance for afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms this weekend, mostly over the higher mountains and western foothills and temps to remain above seasonal norms.

Our recent snow has now lifted the season total for this year to 175 inches on Conifer Mountain, which puts us right at our seasonal average. I have also recorded 1.50 inches of precip in May so far, which has greatly helped lower the fire danger and allowed Jefferson County to lower our fire ban to a stage 1 level.

Band of showers currently moving through the foothills with some thunderstorms and small hail and graupel. Snow level near 9000-9500 ft and could lower to 8000 overnight. Some showers could presist inbto late night hours.

Looks like a repeat for Mothers Day with some lingering clouds Sunday monring, then more showers and thunderstorms by Sunday afternoon and evening. Snow level should remain above 10,000 ft on Sunday, although small hail and graupel possible in heavier showers and thunderstorms.

As upper trough moves shouth of CO next week should be warmer and drier, with temps back above seasonal norms Monday through Friday, and only a very slighgt chance for showers Wednesday through Friday.
