ARKANSAS FIRE UPDATE - SOUTH PARK RANGER DISTRICT
FAIRPLAY, Colo., June 14, 2012 / 17:00 – The Arkansas Fire is currently burning on the
South Park Ranger District in Park County. The park county Sheriff’s office has issued a
voluntary evacuation for a one mile radius around the fire. The notifications of this voluntary
evacuation were made via emergency alert notification calls.
Size: Estimated to be 40 acres and burning in heavy fuels: Ponderosa pine and mixed conifer
Location: Two miles west of Lake George and 1 mile South of Highway 24
Resources: Nine engines (4 VFD from Lake George and 5 federal engines), one water tender,
three firefighting hand crews, two helicopters, 10 smokejumpers along with numerous overhead
support.
Cause: Lightning
Weather: Winds have been fairly calm today which has helped the firefighting efforts. The
recent cloud cover has significantly reduced fire behavior.
Structures Threatened: Eight structures within one mile.
Alerts: The Park County Sheriff’s office has issued a voluntary evacuation order for the homes in
the immediate area of the fire. There were 99 emergency alert notification calls made and of those 99 calls, 61 of
those calls were delivered to either to a person or some sort of messaging device.
Safety: The public being asked not to stop on the highway to avoid traffic problems.
