MORRISON, Colo., Dec. 3, 2013 – Fire personnel on the Pike National Forest, South Platte Ranger District, may begin to burn slash piles in Douglas and Jefferson Counties as weather allows. Smoke could be visible from Highway 285 near Bailey and the Indian Creek area.
The project areas includes: Buffalo Creek area along the 550 Road, AG Ranch (Shawnee) area on the south side of Highway 285 and Russell Ridge area north of County Road 67.
Burns may occur now through spring 2014. Ignitions will take place only when conditions are optimal. The setting is ideal when surrounding fuels are moist, and winds are favorable to minimize smoke impacts to surrounding communities. Once burning begins, the slash piles are checked daily until declared out. Burning activity may last from one to several days, on a recurring basis.
The piles are a result of tree thinning to reduce the potential for extreme fire behavior and increase fire management options in the event of a wildfire. These projects are part of a multi-year undertaking.
