April 13, 2016 - Metro Denver Colorado/CDOT Region 1 - Concrete Barrier Work Necessary for Safety of Traveling Public

CLEAR CREEK COUNTY – Beginning at 10 p.m. on Sunday, April 17, until 8 a.m. on Friday, April 22, the Colorado Department of Transportation will require a 24-hour right lane closure of westbound Interstate 70 through the Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnel in order to replace damaged concrete barrier. Crews will remove portions of damaged barrier, set a form, pour concrete and allow the concrete to set. All work is weather dependent and will be suspended if conditions warrant.

“Our first priority is the safety of the traveling public,” said Paul Jesaitis, CDOT Region 1 Transportation Director. “Because we’re in a lower traffic volume period on the I-70 mountain corridor, we wanted to take advantage of this time to address an immediate safety concern by replacing this barrier.”

During this closure, traffic will be reduced to one lane at the westbound EJMT tunnel approach, with the roadway resuming to two travel lanes upon exiting the tunnel. Speed will be reduced to 40 miles per hour. Due to water and ice that get into the tunnel during winter months and the extreme freeze/thaw cycles, the Type 4 concrete barrier is crumbling in areas throughout the westbound EJMT tunnel bore, posing a safety risk to the traveling public.
