PSA: Spotting Smoke and Calling It In - How You Can Help

A good reminder from EFR Captain Matt Swinden...

PSA - Spotting smoke:

It is that time of the season when we have summer time lightning storms. Did you know that Colorado has over 500,000 ground strikes per year? Fire can often start from lightning strikes up to three days given the right conditions. And EFR is starting to see “little” fires here and along the Front Range.

Now how can you help? By doing what you are already doing and that is being vigilant and calling in (911) plumes of smoke that you see. Now the information that you provide will help greatly in finding the source of the smoke by giving the following information:

1) Your location either address, lat / lon, or road intersections.
2) The direction of the smoke from where you are located. If you have a compass a bearing that is great. Any landmarks, etc.
3) How far away is the smoke?
4) What does the smoke look like? Color, is it “heavy or light”, wispy, or a “huge plume”.
5) Can you see the base of the smoke or the origin of the smoke?
6) What is the smoke doing? Is it puffing, growing stronger, diminishing.

The Evergreen community does a great job calling 911 for smoke checks, so the more information you can provide the better for the EFR firefighters to help find the source of the smoke.
