Slash pile burns near Wellington Lake

18 Feb 2018 13:56 #1 by MountainTownAlerts
At approximately 11:30am on the scanner there was chatter about smoke near Wellington Lake. It was determined to be slash pile burns by USFS, and Elk Creek was told to stand down from going to check.

We received a Tweet just now asking if we knew more. It being as windy as it is, please keep an eye out for this and call 911 if you think it’s growing. If anyone has pictures they can share, we’d be grateful. If we hear any further updates, we will post here.

North Fork Fire was just toned out for a request to assist USFS with pile burns. Smoke visible from the end of Turkey Ln in Burland area. USFS does have personnel on scene.

What flipping idiot decided it was a good idea to do a slash burn with a high wind warning?!?! North Fork Fire not make an impression on the forest service? 3 people died, because some idiot decided it was a good idea to do a "control" burn with high wind warnings. Really??? Do they not pay attention to the weather service? Even if you don't...do they not notice the hurricane force winds blowing around them??? Complete idiots...

Sadly unless there are more complaints these government agencies think they can do whatever they want. The sadder thing is there is a cap on what they have to payout should they start a fire which is a pile of crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Crews from @ICFPD @PSICC_NF @NorthForkFire worked controlled slash pile burn near Wellington Lake/Green Mountain today

@NorthForkFire @ICFPD helping @PSICC_NF manage pile burns at #greenmtnrx near Wellington Lake understand smoke is alarming but this is low intensity fire that helps prevent catastrophic fires in the future. All fire within prescription area.

This is what conditions were like at the #greenmtnrx were like a few days ago when pile ignition occurred.

These are what conditions look like today. Conditions rapidly change fire managers do expect that this can and will occur. Fire is still low intensity lowering the risk of large catastrophic fire in the future.
