Due to large wildfires in Colorado, #SpringFire, #416Fire and #WestonPassFire, Air Quality Health Advisories remain in effect through Tuesday morning for many communities across the state. Images from Viero Wireless in La Veta and Sangre de Cristo. #CoFire www.colorado.gov/airquality/colo_advisory.aspx

Issued for central portions of Park County
Affected Area: central portions of Park County. Locations include, but are not limited to Garo and Hartsel.

Advisory in Effect: 8:00 AM MDT Monday, July 2, 2018 to 9:00 AM MDT Tuesday, July 3, 2018.

Outlook: Areas of moderate to heavy smoke from the Weston Pass Fire are impacting central Park County Monday morning, mainly from the fire southeastward through Garo to Hartsel. Conditions will improve by Monday afternoon as the smoke lifts and moves mainly to the east and northeast. However, smoke will likely increase again Monday night and Tuesday morning as smoke settles into the Bear Creek and Rough and Tumbling Creek drainages, likely impacting Garo and Hartsel.

Public Health Recommendations: If smoke is thick or becomes thick in your neighborhood you may want to remain indoors. This is especially true for those with heart disease, respiratory illnesses, the very young, and the elderly. Consider limiting outdoor activity when moderate to heavy smoke is present. Consider relocating temporarily if smoke is present indoors and is making you ill. If visibility is less than 5 miles in smoke in your neighborhood, smoke has reached levels that are unhealthy.

Incident Information: inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5876/

Weather:
Weather today is expected to be dry and slightly warmer than Sunday. Afternoon wind gusts will be 20-25 mph. Relative humidity levels will range from 9-13%. Moisture will be on the increase across the area for Tuesday and Wednesday, increasing the chances for thunderstorms and the potential for gusty, erratic winds.

Current Situation:
The fire area did not experience an increase in relative humidity Sunday night so firefighters are gearing up for a longer burning period today. Fire activity is expected to pick up beginning around 11 a.m. and will probably remain active well into the evening. Gusty winds could create rapid rates of spread.

Sunday afternoon the fire spotted across the fire line in Div. Z on the south side. Firefighters were unable to contain the spot and the fire made a significant push southward, prompting the Park County Sheriff to call for a mandatory evacuation of the Campground of the Rockies Association (CORA), located adjacent to Highway 285 directly west of Antero Reservoir. The fire did not reach CORA; it is currently approximately 2 miles to the northwest of the camp.

In Div. A, firefighters will be securing the dozer line between Div. A and Div. Z. In Div. Z, the crews will be building dozer line off of Jones Hill. Along Hwy. 285 in Div. M, firefighters will be continuing with structure protection around CORA and developing a fire line to Road 434. In Div. D, firefighters will continue to secure the fire perimeter and provide structure protection in the Lynch Creek and Rich Creek areas.

There will be several additional aircraft on the fire today including two more Type 1 helicopters, two KMAX, and one air crane.

PIO Briefing: There will be a public briefing at 2:00 PM outside at Prather’s Grocery Store. PIOs will conduct these briefings on a daily basis.

Community Meeting: There will be a Community Meeting on Tues. July 3 at 6:00 PM at the Fair Barn at 880 Bogue St.

Closures and Public Safety: U.S. Highway 285 between Fairplay and Antero and Weston Pass Road (County Road 22) will remain closed. For up to date information visit www.cotrip.org . Evacuation status may change and evolve. For up to date information, please visit www.parkco.us .

  • The #WestonPassFire is currently 6575 acres in size with 0% containment.

#MandatoryEvacuations for Black Mountain south of County Rd 22 and CORA remain in effect. Black Mountain north of County Road 22 and Thousand Peaks subdivisions remain on voluntary evacuations.

  • The U.S. Forest Service is no longer allowing any campfires of any kind. This means that even campfires in designated, enclosed fire pits are not allowed. Please review the attached update to the #BurnBan in effect for Park County and take note of this update and other prohibited activities covered by the ban. More Info: bit.ly/firebanupdate1

  • Effective immediately Hwy 285 is completely closed from County Rd 22 to Antero Junction due to visibility. Residents will not be able to access the Hwy. Emergency and Fire Personnel Only.

  • There have been many inquiries about CORA Campground of the Rockies Association. The main fire edge is approximately 1.5 miles from CORA.

Yesterday the fire picked up in activity and pushed southward. Currently there are firing operations being conducted along road 168. Two heavy air tankers are supporting this operation on the southern side of the fire. Much of the smoke in the area is related to these operations.

The evacuation orders from July 1 are still in place.
