DENVER — A child was killed in a multi-vehicle crash on the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 near the Lookout Mountain exit Friday afternoon.

The patrol did not say how many were injured. The age of the child is unknown.

Child killed, 2 others injured in crash that shut down I-70 near Genesee
A fatal crash shut down westbound I-70 near Genesee for more than four hours Friday.

A two-year-old girl who was in the silver car was killed. A 28-year-old woman was driving that car at the time of the crash.

There is no word on why the car crossed the median, but drugs or alcohol are being investigated as a contributing factor in the crash.

The 28-year-old female driver of the silver car has been arrested, according to a state patrol spokesman. She is suspected of driving under the influence. Her relationship to the child has not been determined.

Authorities are awaiting test results to ascertain the elements of her suspected intoxication, and will adjust the woman’s charges to reflect those drugs discovered.

DENVER -- Family members say the father of a 2-year-old girl killed in a crash on I-70 Friday afternoon is struggling to come to terms with his loss.

Sophia Rivera was in the back seat of her mom's car when the crash happened.

"She was going to drop Sophia off at her father's house and never made it," said Corenia Rivera, a paternal aunt.

Investigators at the Colorado State Patrol say the mother was eastbound on I-70 when she suddenly slammed on her brakes, lost control of her car, careened through the median and into the westbound lanes, and then struck a pickup truck.

Corenia has set up a GoFundMe account to help the young dad with funeral expenses.
