Sharing this information at the request of the Jeffco Sheriff's Office regarding the incident in Evergreen on Saturday, December 5, 2020:
On Saturday afternoon, the Sheriff’s Office was searching in downtown Evergreen for two men we believed at the time to be associated with a stolen vehicle that crashed along Upper Bear Creek Road earlier Saturday morning. One of our deputies had contacted the two men along Meadow Drive but they ignored her commands and one of the suspects fled from her. When she tried to detain the second suspect, he fought with her and also fled. Thankfully, our deputy was not injured and other responding deputies were able to set up a perimeter and initiate a search in the area for the two suspects. We located one and took him into custody, but we were unable to locate the second suspect on Saturday. Yesterday, the second suspect was arrested in South Jeffco and is currently in custody.
While we were searching for the suspects, the dispatch center Jeffcom received many helpful calls from Evergreen residents regarding their location. We really appreciated this information because it helped our deputies locate one of the suspects. I also want to apologize for a lapse in information. Jeffcom sent CodeRed messages to residents in the area of the search and it’s my understanding one of these messages was inaccurate in that it mentioned Golden. However, when we have breaking incidents that involve a shelter in place for local residents, the JCSO also usually puts information out about the incident on Twitter. (We use Twitter for breaking incidents rather than Facebook because our information changes rapidly and the incident is usually resolved in a short amount of time, allowing for brief updates.) Unfortunately we did not put information out about this incident on Twitter and we should have. Therefore, we are in the process of amending our internal policy to include a requirement that information be shared via Twitter (and other social media platforms when appropriate) whenever a CodeRed message is sent, to help avoid confusion, fear, and frustration in the future.
