Sheriff’s Office Launches Disasters & Emergencies Guide

Jefferson County, CO. – As National Emergency Preparedness Month draws to a close, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office introduces a new, interactive and user-friendly Disaster and Emergencies Guide to help residents prepare and plan for disasters. Volume One of the guide focuses on wildfires and encourages residents to “Be Your Own Hero” by preparing and protecting themselves and their property against wildfires. The guide is available on the Sheriff’s Office website and can be reviewed and downloaded at bit.ly/JCSOWildfire . The Be Your Own Hero flyer is attached.

Wildfires can occur any time of year in Colorado, as evidenced last fall with the two largest wildfires in Colorado’s history: the Cameron Peak Fire and the East Troublesome Fire. Currently, the Ptarmigan Fire is burning in nearby Summit County and in the past two weeks, the Sheriff’s Office has responded to five small wildfires that were quickly extinguished. Despite fall weather, the threat of wildfire still exists and we encourage residents who live in mountainous areas to take an additional step toward being their own hero by reviewing the Disasters and Emergencies Guide.

The guide includes emergency phone numbers and actions that can be taken before, during and after a wildfire. It also includes descriptions of emergency notifications and general information on how to stay informed, develop an emergency plan, and make an emergency kit. Information for persons with disabilities or those who own livestock is also provided in the comprehensive guide. The guide will grow as additional volumes are added to help residents prepare and plan for the more common disasters that occur in Colorado; look for Volume Two on winter storms next.
