Prescribed Burning Planned for Crooked Top State Land Trust

Park County, CO – The Colorado State Forest Service (CSFS), in cooperation with the Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) will be conducting prescribed burning operations on in the Deer Creek Rd. area near Crooked Top Mountain north of Bailey beginning on Monday, February 6, 2023. This project consists of 19 acres of approximately 200 slash piles created during previous mitigation activities.

Burning will only be conducted under specific guidelines established by the Division of Fire Prevention and Control, including having adequate snow cover on the ground and acceptable weather forecasts and fuels conditions that meet guidelines for safe and effective burning and adequate smoke dispersal.
The main objective of prescribed burning is to reduce hazardous fuel accumulation for the purpose of public safety, fuels mitigation and habitat improvement. Burning operations will occur as weather conditions permit, and could extend into the spring of 2023

CSFS works closely with other agencies, such as the Colorado Air Pollution Control Division, DFPC, and local authorities in developing and implementing any burning project.

Burning may continue periodically through the winter and spring as weather and fuel conditions
allow. For additional information, contact DFPC PIO Tracy LeClair at (970) 841-9230 or This email address is being protected from spambots. Good morning,

Conditions appear to be favorable today 2/6/2023 for ignitions.

Smoke may be visible in the area and Firefighters monitor the area after burning is complete. Public and firefighter safety is always the number-one priority in burning operations. Seeing flames and smoke, even after dark, is part of normal operations. This reduces fuels on the landscape under the safest conditions. If you see alarming smoke or flames, please contact Pueblo Interagency Dispatch Center at (719) 553-1600.

Thank you,
Seth Yeary, CDPS
