Platte Canyon School District enrollment this school year is down by a net number of 106, which is more than double the previous estimated net drop of 46 for the district outlined in an article in the Aug. 26 Flume. Assuming a loss in state funding of $4,500 a student, a net drop of 106 students in averages over several years would translate to a loss of $477,000 per year in state funding to the district. Details in this week's Flume.
A few of the High School kids have left because they don't offer courses that they want to take and Conifer does. There is a serious feeling of apathy wafting from the superintendent regarding education. It seems to all be about numbers to him.

I attended a meeting last year in which the Doc and HS prinicpal were concerned that allowing kids to take higher level courses above there grade would enable them to graduate earlier. The concern? The funding for that student would cease a year early.
When I spoke up that this could hurt the student's future chance of earning a military school appointment or acceptance into a top school, their reply was that "we will study this later."
