We have lost an important member of our community family – Kay Thelen – and would like to pay her a special tribute.
Kay moved to Conifer with her two children Stephanie and Chris and husband Jim in 1978.
In 1997, Kay joined the community committee to examine and update the Conifer 285 Corridor Area Plan, an advisory document used by Jefferson County. The process took four years to complete. Even before the County adopted the revisions, Conifer Area Council was formed as a grass roots information resource for Conifer. Often Board meetings were held at Kay’s office at Floor to Ceiling Interiors. She shared her resources and talents, whether donating copies, as treasurer for the group, or spearheading a committee “The Long Rangers”, envisioning a strong community for the future. She had a gift for bringing ideas out of people and expressing ways for people to work together.
Kay also served as a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) for the Elk Creek Fire Department for five years. She got Conifer Area Council involved in the Colorado Nonprofit Association (CANPO), a statewide nonprofit membership coalition connecting nonprofits of all sizes, missions and geographic locations. Her ideas were forward thinking. She had a vision for a growing, enduring community. Kay loved her family, her home and Conifer.
Conifer Area Council is now taking donations for a Kay Thelen Memorial Bench that will be placed along the Conifer Community Trail in a location currently being determined. If you would like to contribute, please send tax deductible donations to CONIFER AREA COUNCIL, PO Box 787, Conifer, CO 80433.
We hold her dear in our hearts and hope someday we can all sit on Kay’s bench.
