The Lower North Fork Wildfire Commission released a final report on Jan. 4 that made eight recommendations and suggested four pieces of legislation. The top three recommendations deal with coordination among fire districts, raising the cap on damage recoveries, and land-use regulations regarding defensible space.
But the report came under criticism because the commission failed to execute its first responsibility – investigating the causes of the wildfire, which resulted from a State Forest Service prescribed burn in March 2012 near Conifer in Jefferson County. The fire burned 4,140 acres, destroyed 27 homes, and killed three people.
