Announcement: 285 Barrel Stave DownHill!!!
The First Ever Barrel Stave Downhill - Skiing on Hwy 285!!! Saturday February 23, 2013 9:00AM - 3:00PM
(Barrel Staves - the wooden planks that are used to make Wine Barrels)
Try it Free! Sign Up below to Ski Free or Enter the Competition!!! 9:00AM - 3PM at Meyer Ranch Park Open Space on South Hwy 285 in Conifer! (Competition limited to first 100 paid/donation entries)
The event will allow “would be” and avid skiers alike to test their skills in an unconventional and fun skiing event. The legend goes that prior to modern day skis, European villagers would disassemble old wine barrels and use the “Staves” as skis, affix an open toe type of footing on each, and tie a short rope from one ski to the other for steering; creating the Wine Barrel “Stave” Skis. Legend also tells of times the villages would hold Barrel Stave Downhill contests and festivals to enjoy the winter days on the slopes with their friends and families enjoying the day with craft vendors and entertainment in the Village. Kids Activities (Pie/Cookie Eating Contests), food and drinks will be available. Kids under 12 Ski Free! (Village Location TBA).
The 285 Optimists are recreating this event in the foothills communities of Jefferson County, Colorado in a place where the people of the US Highway 285 locales often meet for winter fun on the natural Open Space. The event will be open to the public with no required admission fee to try to ski (spectators welcome there will be fun and food activities for all). Donations, entry fees and other suggested contributions from the event will benefit the Youth Programs of the 285 Optimist Club, and local schools... more on Optimist International at http://www.Optimist.org
Sign up for the Individual Competition, or as a Team Leader to form a "TEAM" for the Team Relay competition. Details, and entry form/rules will be sent to each individual or Team Leader upon sign Up. Hello and Thank You for signing up for the Debut Event the "285 Barrel Stave Downhill" on Saturday February 23rd. If you haven't yet... there is still time! If you signed up to ski, or as a spectator or volunteer.... we appreciate your support!
The Firefighters Team Relay Challenge between Elk Creek (our host FFD), Platte Canyon, Evergreen and Inter-Canyon will be something to watch for sure!!!
Stave Skiers should arrive between 8:45am and 10:00 to sign in and receive credentials. Please be prepared for cold weather and dress in lots of layers in case it warms or you foresee falling a lot (it might make the landing just a bit softer!) Over the ankle boots, gloves, hats and sunglasses will be practical to have/wear. There will be an award for "Best Freestyle (Costume and Technique will be judged!)
Everyone, volunteers especially, are welcome to join us at our pre-event prep meeting coming up on Feb. 18th (yes, this coming Monday evening - 6:30pm) at Los 3 Garcias Restaurant in the Aspen Park Village Shopping Center (same center as the King Soopers - between the Big R and Comfort Dental).
