A statewide task force’s recommendations could have a major impact on many Park County homeowners living in forested areas – and those elsewhere in Colorado – in terms of what they would pay for home insurance and steps they might have to take to create defensible space for protection against wildfires.
The eight-month-old, 18-member Task Force on Wildfire Insurance and Forest Health completed a 50-page report with the recommendations and submitted it on Sept. 30 to Gov. John Hickenlooper and the Colorado Legislature.
The report recommends homes be rated on a 1-to-10 scale based on the risk of wildfire, that fees be charged on homes built in heavily wooded areas and that insurers be informed about the specific risks of such homes.
