Drought key predictor of spruce beetle outbreak, study finds

Although Park County has been spared from the spread of a massive spruce beetle outbreak, in neighboring counties and elsewhere in Colorado the pest has made its way across 311,000 acres of forest, a new University of Colorado-Boulder study reports.
For the first time, the total acreage in Colorado impacted by the spruce beetle has surpassed that of the mountain pine beetle, according to study findings released on Oct. 10. Details in this week's Flume.
