When Bill Moore Jr. purchased Moore Lumber and Hardware in Bailey from his parents in 1984, he never imagined it would be the first of four hardware stores he would own. He also never predicted that he would be voted “Lumberman of the Year” by the Mountain States Lumber & Building Material Dealer Association, but that’s exactly what happened at the organization’s 2013 year-end celebration in Denver last month.
Each year, the association, which represents building materials dealers in the Mountain States Region, selects its Lumberman of the Year to recognize a member who demonstrates success in business, personal integrity, industrial knowledge, professionalism, community and industry leadership, business ethics, dedication and tenure within the industry.
“I didn’t set out to own four lumberyards and hardware stores, and I certainly wasn’t planning to win awards along the way,” said Moore. “My goal has always been to support the people who are building and making improvements to homes and businesses in these small communities. At all of our stores we just want to provide the best possible lumber and home improvement products and services to customers who have become our friends over the years.”
That same customer service and neighborhood feel is a common thread among Ace Hardware retailers. In fact, this year Ace Hardware ranked “Highest In Customer Satisfaction” among home improvement retail stores for the seventh consecutive year by J.D. Power & Associates.
Moore officially joined his father in the lumber business more than four decades ago and today leads four hardware and lumber companies, each one containing tens of thousands of lumber, building material, and hardware SKUs, which he meticulously hand selects. Whether found working the sales floor or walking the yards, Moore consistently helps customers through the highest level of knowledge on every product.
In addition to his own personal businesses, Moore has been a proponent for the industry and has been instrumental in organizing the independent retailer dealers throughout the Rocky Mountain Region to help level the playing field with the big box home improvement retailers while striving to improve quality of product and service overall.
Moore has also served as Chairman and President of the Rocky Mountain Ace Stores group (RMAS) every year since 2006. He co-founded the group of about 100 Ace Hardware stores within the region, which works together to enhance their collective customer service and community involvement.
Earlier this year, Moore opened Moore Lumber & Ace Hardware in Pine Junction, making it his fourth store. He also owns Moore Lumber & Ace Hardware in Bailey together with his son Erin, as well as Greatwood Lumber & Ace Hardware in Bennett and Douglas Lumber in partnership with John Jones in Castle Rock.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther
The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill
