Justin Mock of Conifer barely beat out a second-place finisher to win the Gold Rush Days Pack Burro Race Sunday in Buena Vista.
It was Mock’s second time racing with burro Yukon Jack, a fast and “chaotic” male donkey who “just wants to be in the lead all the time,” Mock said.
The pair won with a time of 1 hour, 34 minutes, 24.158 seconds, just a few donkey hairs in front of last year’s race winner, Patrick Sweeney of Manhattan Beach, Calif., who finished with burro Scratch in 1:34:24.4.
