At the 19th annual 2014 Boreas Pass Railroad Day, visitors had a chance to go back in time and acquaint themselves with the people and places along the Como to Breckenridge Denver South Park and Pacific High Line narrow-gauge rail route.
Railroad Day is a living museum where visitors can see and touch Colorado’s railroad history and retrace the high line route by car up and over the Boreas Pass road.
Railroad Day takes place on the third Saturday of August and is a joint effort of the South Park Ranger District, South Park National Heritage Area, Como Civic Association, the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance and private citizens.
During the 1859 Colorado gold rush, people flocked to the Kansas Territory, building new towns and railroads. Those railroads were a major factor in developing the economic foundation for the South Park region.
The DSP&P starting building the route in April 1880 and it was finally finished in August 1882.
