On Aug. 17 around 8 p.m., Park County Sheriff’s Corporal Dave Leffler was off duty when he spotted a car driving erratically as it passed mile marker 217 on U.S. Highway 285 in Shawnee.

During the next hour Mitchell Wayne Ford, 27, of Jefferson County challenged deputies dispatched to the scene to balance the need to apprehend him and at the same time avoid endangering the public.

Deputies from the Fairplay area were called out to rendezvous with the silver Subaru, now approaching Kenosha Pass.

By the time Ford reached the bottom of Kenosha near mile marker 207, deputies were positioned to meet his car.
